Record the question and the cohort
A research result needs a defined population, observation window, inclusion rules, and known missingness. The fraction among measured animals answers a different question from the rate in an at-risk population. Naming the measure precisely prevents an attractive chart from carrying a stronger claim than the data supports.
In our scoped animal-data pilots, explicit source definitions and cohort boundaries were essential to deciding which interpretations remained unresolved.
Check what the fields actually mean
Two columns can appear to show a strong relationship because one partly defines the other. A missing outcome can mean an animal was not measured, rather than that the outcome did not occur. A later import date can represent backfilled data rather than a new biological event.
An evidence card should make these distinctions visible beside the calculation. A reviewer needs the source version, field definitions, observed counts, and exclusions to reproduce the result.
Test the assumptions that carry the conclusion
Pedigree calculations can depend on whether a repeated ancestor identity is genuinely the same individual. Masking an uncertain identity can show which conclusions are sensitive to that assumption. It does not establish that the original identity was wrong or that the counterfactual is biologically true.
The useful output is an explanation of sensitivity and a next verification step. That is a stronger research workflow than presenting the counterfactual as a discovery.
Give AI a bounded role
A language model can propose alternative explanations, identify a missing check, or help a reviewer compare methods. Deterministic tools should supply the calculated values, and the workflow should preserve the human reviewer’s disposition.
An unresolved card is a valid output. Broader scientific claims require the appropriate independent validation, including checks for sampling, relatedness, measurement changes, and prior work.
