Start inside the workflow
A forward-deployed engineer works close to the people who operate the system. The starting point is a real task: the handoff that keeps failing, the integration that requires manual repair, or the decision no one can make confidently. Observing that work often reveals constraints a specification leaves out.
The first output should be a shared problem definition, a map of the relevant systems, and an agreement on what improvement would look like. That creates a basis for implementation and evaluation.
Use AI to investigate and build
AI can help inspect an unfamiliar repository, identify candidate dependencies, draft implementation options, and propose test cases. Those outputs become useful when an engineer checks them against the actual code, users, and operating environment.
An implementation proposal should identify which behavior changes, which integrations depend on it, how it will be evaluated, and who will operate it. Model confidence is not a substitute for those answers.
Keep leadership connected to implementation
Architecture choices become real in data contracts, permission checks, deployment behavior, and failure recovery. An embedded engineer should be able to explain the tradeoff and carry it through the implementation.
That does not make the engineer the owner of every business decision. Product priorities, access approvals, and operational acceptance still need named counterparts. The engagement works best when those responsibilities are clear.
Deliver ownership along with software
A useful engagement leaves a working capability and a team that understands it. Decision records, focused tests, deployment guidance, and operational runbooks are part of delivery.
Success criteria can be defined around a workflow milestone, a reduction in a measured failure mode, or the retirement of a specific dependency. The measure should be agreed in context rather than borrowed from an unrelated project.
